Definition of Plating
Plating is the process of applying a thin layer of gold, silver or other metal to a conductive surface. The process of covering the material’s surface is performed to inhibit corrosion, improve solderability, improve wearability, reduce friction, improve paint adhesion and alter conductivity.
Plating Methods
There are several plating methods with many variations. In one method, a solid surface is covered with a metal sheet then heated and pressured to fuse them together (a version of this is Sheffield plate). Other plating techniques include vapor deposition under vacuum and sputter deposition.
